RaceJoy Transitioning to “Free Only” Experience for Participants and Spectators

RunSignUp is changing RaceJoy’s business model to offer a “free only” experience for participants and spectators. Previously, race events were able to either purchase the buyout option or choose a consumer model where the participant and spectator paid an in-app upgrade fee of 99 cents for RaceJoy’s features. Key user features include continuous live tracking, GPS-based progress alerts and cheer sending.

The consumer model option will be phased out by the end of 2016 and will only be available for 2016 events that have already been loaded into RaceJoy. Going forward, race events that wish to have RaceJoy’s innovative race day experience will be required to offer the experience as a free service by purchasing the buyout option. RaceJoy’s pricing is set to be affordable for any race and includes significant value for the race itself.

picture1

Why are we doing this?

Consistent Experience

There are many reasons that led to the decision to move to this free-to-consumers model. One of the main motivations is to ease user confusion and potential frustration – participants and spectators are often confused when some races are providing free tracking and cheers and others are not. Having a consistent, “always free” app will help overcome this.

Affordable Innovation

Participants are expecting some type of tracking to be provided and RaceJoy offers the most innovative solution in the industry. The buyout price is competitively set so that any race can afford to purchase the buyout or have a sponsor cover the cost.

Higher Engagement

In addition, those races that choose the buyout can more easily promote the availability of RaceJoy to all of their participants and spectators. We have seen much wider adoption and better feedback for races who offer a free option.

Race Value

Another key reason for this adjustment is that RaceJoy is offering a lot of value not just to the participants and their supporting family and friends, but for the race as well. From sponsor promotion to race day monitoring, we are continuing to build and expand the features that help race operations. All of this requires significant resources in development and support. Some key offerings available through RaceJoy for the race and sponsor include:

Race Day Monitoring:

The RaceJoy Race Day Monitoring tool provides organizers with the ability to track runners/cyclists and operational staff live from a web console and have immediate access to information to manage race operations and respond to race day conditions. See more about this tool by reading this blog…

Value for Sponsors:

RaceJoy provides a powerful way to provide sponsor promotion with a highly engaged and expanded audience through in-app advertising and branding opportunities.

picture4

Race Promotion:

RaceJoy provides an opportunity for the race to attract more registrants and to reach each participants’ network of family and friends through its race listing in RaceJoy, social media promotion and through every GPS-based progress alert issued on the course.

picture2

Race Operations Management:

RaceJoy offers the ability for organizers to track the location of key race operations like the Lead and Tail vehicle and to communicate with them. And, the Race News Alert system makes for a very useful emergency communications tool, and to inform races about race day changes or key information like parking and packet pickup.

Picture3.png

And yes, all of this is included in the buyout price. So, not only are races able to offer the most advanced form of tracking available in the market, they are able to then use this to help with their own management of race day.

Thank you, race organizers, for embracing RaceJoy and providing a one-of-a-kind race day experience and for your dedication to quality and innovation. Together, we are changing the race experience!

Ability Tour Embraces All Abilities with RaceJoy!

ability

This weekend on Saturday, July 16, the Ability Tour is offering RaceJoy to its participants and spectators as part of the day’s experience. The inclusive bicycle event, organized by Peckham, Inc., is dedicated to raising awareness for people of ALL abilities and embraces those with disabilities so that they too can enjoy the road. The proceeds from the Ability Tour go directly toward equipping other recreational events with the resources and accommodations to make race events more accessible for all.

This event is very unique in its effort to create an opportunity for people with disabilities to experience a cycling event that many would not be able to experience on their own. The race provides assistive technology, including handcycles, tricycles, recumbents and tandems. In addition, the event offers staff member support for those that need assistance on the course.

“The Ability Tour has taken the universal design philosophy and applied it to a bicycle tour. Accessibility for individuals who use a wheelchair or individuals with cognitive impairments has been addressed in every phase of the tour. Everyone has the opportunity to push themselves by riding with the fastest cyclists in the state to the individuals completing their first 8 mile ride with a companion cyclist.”

– John Waterman, Programs to Educate All Cyclists

The Ability Tour offers multiple course options on race day, including 8, 30 or 50-mile loops. Riders can also choose to complete the 50-mile loop twice for a century!

The courses begin at Peckham, Inc. in Lansing, MI and take scenic roads that are sure to please. The roads are very well-marked and extremely bicycle friendly. There will be SAG services and aid stations along the way for basic bike repairs, food, beverages and even Frisbees! Lunch is Chipotle!

tour

As part of this year’s event, race organizers are adding RaceJoy as a complimentary service for participating riders and their supporting family and friends. By including RaceJoy, those who download the app and carry their phone on race day will have access to live cyclist tracking on an interactive map view. Friends and family, both at the race site and from their homes, can track participants and know exactly where they are along the course.

Participants and spectators will also receive GPS-based progress alerts that include information like pace and estimated finish time. The alerts will be sent out every 5 miles along the course. Participants have the option to post these alerts to their personal Facebook and Twitter walls in real-time.

Another popular feature available for free is Send-a-Cheer, which includes the ability to instantly send fun, pre-recorded cheers or personalized Text-to-Cheer messages any time before, during or after the race.

We are excited to be apart of this year’s Ability Tour and look forward to changing the race experience together! Good luck riders – it’s time to get your bike on!

University of Michigan Runners Embrace RaceJoy!

bighouse

Race organizers of the Big House 5K: Trail to the Victors at University of Michigan offered RaceJoy’s advanced tracking and cheers as a free service this last weekend. Participants and spectators embraced the technology with more than 500 users on race day!

University-centered races such as this typically have higher usage in RaceJoy. These types of races have a greater proportion of Millennials and tend to show fast adoption of technology and are power users of mobile apps. Another trend: the number of runners carrying their phones while running continues to be on the rise. A 2015 National Runner Survey from Running USA reported that 57% of runners now carry phones while running. Those who downloaded RaceJoy for the Big House 5K were treated to live continuous tracking, GPS-based progress alerts, and cheer sending. We had all types using RaceJoy this last weekend – from six minute mile pace runners to 20 minute mile pace.

Ross Athletic Campus and finished on the University of Michigan’s football stadium, the Big House. #GoBlue

Check out these runners – notice they have phones!

Participants received progress alerts at every mile, based on the GPS location using their phones. The alerts include information like pace and estimated finish time and the participant can opt to post these alerts to Facebook or Twitter. More than 1,350 alerts were sent!

Trend Setters Reaping High Usage with Free Tracking

Races across the country are getting their races RaceJoy Ready so they can offer advanced runner tracking, GPS progress alerts at every mile and cheer sending on race day. Trend setters seeking to provide innovation for their events and reach a larger audience are choosing the buyout option and offering these features for free. As a result, they are gaining a high adoption from race participants and their supporting family and friends.

Picture1

The more participants who use RaceJoy, the more supporting family and friends will also use RaceJoy. This increases your brand awareness and introduces your race to an increased number of spectators who could be potential participants next year! If you have a sponsor of RaceJoy, they in turn receive significant value by being promoted on multiple fronts with a highly engaged audience. See this recent blog as an example of sponsor promotion.

The 26.2 with Donna race offered RaceJoy’s tracking free this year and usage of these interactive features increased by 125%! This year’s race had more than 1,100 race participants use RaceJoy to be tracked via their phone during the race where last year there were just under 500 race participants who opted to pay the 99 cents for the live phone tracking. Couple this with an average of two people tracking a given runner and that means a very impressive growth in usage. In addition, the number of cheers sent increased by 149% with 2,220 cheers being issued in 2015 to 5,525 cheers this year.  Now, that is an engaged race audience!

Race organizers can choose to offer RaceJoy’s innovative experience by choosing one of the following options:

  1. Consumer Model: there is no charge to the race organizers – participants and spectators pay an in-app 99 cents fee per race.
  1. Buyout Option: the race organizers or sponsor purchase the buyout option to provide these features to participants and spectators at no cost to them.

Here is a break down of all that’s offered through both pricing options.chart

The buyout option is affordable enough for any race or sponsor to provide RaceJoy’s PhoneTrak features at their race. The buyout option provides the race/sponsor many promotion opportunities to increase awareness and to be prominently recognized for offering RaceJoy’s live phone tracking and cheers.
